Two really enjoyable colonial cities are Taxco and Puebla, both a short distance from Mexico City. Taxco was founded by the Spaniards in 1522 and is in a spectacular setting 6,000 feet up the side of a mountain. It is famous for its centuries old silver mining and to this day silver shopping is one of the main draws to this lovely  colonial gem. Puebla is Mexico's fourth largest city and is best known for its beautiful Talavera tiles, Mexico's national dish "mole poblano" and the Volkswagon plant responsible for churning out the thousands of little green and white beetle taxis throughout Mexico City.
